Deputies Exchange Fire With Gunman in Waldorf; One Person Shot

The Charles County Sheriff's Office says a gunman was shot during an exchange of gunfire with deputies Friday morning.

Deputies were about to serve a search and seizure warrant about 6:30 a.m. at a home in the 4600 block of Gadwell Place in Waldorf when a man armed with a rifle stepped out and threatened officers. There was an exchange of gunfire, and the gunman was shot.

The suspect, who was wanted for alleged mail fraud, was shot multiple times, News4's Tony Tull reported.

Emergency crews flew the injured person, identified as 23-year-old William Payton Bell, to a hospital in Prince George's County with life-threatening injuries. He is listed in stable condition.

The SWAT team was called in to ensure the home was clear. No one else was inside the home.
