D.C. Teachers Approve New Contract

The Washington Teachers Union voted to approve the long-debated teacher's contract proposed by the D.C. government. Just more 1,400 teachers voted for the contract, and 425 voted against it.

The pact would increase teacher salaries by more than 20 percent and include more professional development. The contract also features a pay-for-performance plan and a new teacher evaluation system.

The contract was ratified this afternoon after a tough series of negotiations and controversy surrounding the performance-based elements of the new plan.

The D.C. City Council has yet to sign off on the plan.
