D.C. Officer Guilty of Receiving Stolen Goods

Three officers arrested in March

One of three D.C. police officers arrested earlier this year in an internal sting operation has been found guilty of attempting to receive stolen property.

Dioni Fernandez, an eight-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department, was found guilty by a Superior Court judge Wednesday after a four-day trial. He's scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 27.

Fernandez, 35, and two other officers were arrested in March on charges that they arranged to buy iPads, televisions and other electronic equipment they believed were stolen. Police said Fernandez did this while driving in a police vehicle while on duty and told a cooperating witness he intended to resell the items.

The other two officers, Silvestre Bonilla and Guillermo Ortiz, have previously pleaded guilty. Prosecutors said Ortiz was given supervised probation, a fine and community service, while Bonilla is awaiting sentencing.
