D.C. Gives Security Contractor the Boot

Firm failed weapons inspections, fined for 118 violations

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray's administration is canceling a $41 million contract with the security guard firm in charge of protecting many city government buildings and schools.

According to a spokesperson with the local chapter of the Service Employees International Union, or SEIU, the firm, known as US Security Associates, failed at least 23 weapons inspection tests and was fined at least 118 times for violations at city government buildings.

The union has been pressing the city to cancel its contract with US Security since 2010, when the firm took over security duties for the city.

According to the SEIU, the contract is now open for competitors to bid on.
