The D.C. Water and Sewer Authority has released its 2010 drinking water quality report and will send the results to every household in the District.
The report, based on 30,000 water quality tests conducted in 2010, details levels of regulated and unregulated contaminants and how the drinking water matches up to federal standards.
"We do additional monitoring as well, and the good news is that the drinking water in Washington, D.C., satisfies, by a good margin, all of the safety standards that have been established for drinking water," says D.C. Water's general manager, George Hawkins.
The report warns, however, quality can vary from home to home. Aging water mains and household pipes can degrade water quality and officials recommend property owners inspect pipes and replace old plumbing.
D.C. Water provides drinking water to more than 600,000 residents and businesses.
