Old DNA Evidence Cracks 25-Year-Old Rape Case

DNA samples obtained in 1987 weren't processed until 2012

Montgomery County Police have announced that they've cracked a 25-year-old cold case -- using DNA evidence taken when the crime was committed.

A 20-year-old Silver Spring woman was raped in her apartment in May of 1987, and though police took DNA samples at the time, they gathered dust until February of this year.

On July 2, the Montgomery County Police Crime Lab matched the DNA profile to convicted rapist William David Trice.

Trice commited suicide in 2010 while in jail for a 1988 rape case in Anne Arundel County -- one of two his DNA has been linked to.

Montgomery County Police are encouraging local jursidictions to review unsolved rape cases from the mid- to late-1980s to determine whether DNA evidence can be linked to Trice. Detectives are also asking anyone who believes they were a victim of Trice to contact police at 240-773-5070.
