D.C. Man Dies in Weekend Heat

A D.C. man died during the intense heat that has gripped the Capitol region through the past week.

Dr. Lawrence Graves, 89, of northwest D.C., was found dead in his yard Saturday by his next-door neighbor. Medical examiners confirmed that the death was heat-related.

The victim’s son, Craig Graves, told News4 his father went outside to water the grass Friday evening and apparently passed out due to the intense heat. He was not discovered until Saturday morning, when neighbors called 911 to report a man laying in the yard, according to the son.

Craig Graves said his father's body had been exposed to the heat for over 12 hours before he was found.

Dr. Graves was the third heat-related death in the city this year.

A principal at Rabaut Junior High School in the 1960s, he spent a lot of his time volunteering at Dunbar High School, helping students get scholarships. In the '90s, he served as an ANC commissioner.
