Woman Promoted to Major With Va. State Police

Capt. Tracy Russillo will become the highest-ranking female in the 79-year history of the Virginia State Police when her promotion takes effect Sunday.

Russillo will advance to the rank of major and will become deputy director of the department's Bureau of Administrative and Support Services. Col. Steven Flaherty, the state police superintendent, announced the promotion Friday. Russillo succeeds Maj. Robert Tavenner, who retired last month.

Russillo, a Fredericksburg native, has been with the state police for 22 years. For the last three years, she has overseen day-to-day operations in northern Virginia as Fairfax Division commander.
