Traffic Lights Out of Sync in Montgomery County

You might spend less time at one traffic light than normal, but more time at the next.

Thunderstorms in the Washington region are causing about 200 traffic lights to malfunction in Montgomery County.

Authorities say traffic lights in the Rockville, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Damascus and Derwood areas were not synchronized Wednesday morning, and rush hour traffic will be affected.

The lights are cycling through the normal red yellow green cycle, but they are not timed to favor the predominate flow.

Emil Wolanin, chief traffic engineer with the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, says the county hopes to have the problem fixed by noon.

Commuters are being advised to expect delays and are urged to take public transportation or use alternate routes.
