DC Teen Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison

Teen sentenced for stabbing another teen in Petworth

Derek Johnson, 17, was sentenced today to 14 years in prison.

Johnson received the sentence after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of another teen near a rec center in the Petworth neighborhood.

Johnson was charged as an adult in the stabbing death of Jamal Freeman in October.  Police said Johnson stabbed Freeman one evening near the Raymond Recreation Center in Northwest.

Police said Freeman and Johnson knew each other and that Johnson suspected Freeman of breaking into his home.

Johnson pleaded guilty in November 2011.

Following his time behind bars, Johnson will spend five years on supervised probation.
