Pregnant D.C. Teacher Drowns in North Carolina

Rescuers found Jill Chenet and her husband Matthew floating 20 yards offshore

Jill Chenet, a pregnant second grade teacher at the River School in Northwest D.C., drowned Wednesday. She and her husband were swimming at a beach in North Carolina.

Around 6:45 p.m. a call was made to 911 reporting swimmers in distress.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that rescuers found Jill Chenet and her husband Matthew Chenet floating 20 yards from the shore. Jill, 31, was six months pregnant, and she and the baby were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Matthew, 37, remains in serious condition.
