On this first day of school for thousands of students across our region, we note that there seem to be two kinds of kids in this world: Those who greet the new year with a sense of enthusiasm for the adventures of the coming year, and those who feel a profound sense of loss, dread, gloom and sorrow.

The students at Benjamin Orr Elementary School in the Fairlawn neighborhood in southeast Washington appear to fall into the first category. They even put on their uniforms and showed up at school on Saturdays to take part in the video below, called “Our School is Awesome." The video was produced by a local company, Sun Chase Media.

The project helped to build the student’s confidence, Orr Principal  Michelle Edwards told The Washington Post. “Anything they can do, we do it.”
