Springfield Officer Kills Man Wielding Knife

Joseph Devenney

A Franconia police officer shot and killed a man wielding a knife in Springfield on Friday evening.

Police responded to an initial report of a stabbing at the Virginia Tire and Auto store at 6626 Backlick Road.

A responding officer located a man nearby on the 6500 block of Amherst Avenue, matching the description of the stabbing suspect.  When the officer challenged the man, he brandished a knife and came towards him, Franconia police said.  The officer then drew his weapon and shot the man.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency services transported a man from the tire store who had been stabbed to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The deceased has been identified as 49-year-old Joseph Anthony Croft, of Calamo Street, Springfield.

The officer involved in the shooting, a 15-year veteran, has been put on routine administrative leave while the investigation continues.
