D.C. Principal Resigns Mid-Year After DCPS Announced His Contract Won't Be Renewed

The principal of Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C., who was notified earlier this month his contract with D.C. Public Schools will not be renewed, has resigned.

Peter Cahall notified parents and students of his impending departure Dec. 12 after six years at the Northwest high school. The Washington Post reported Cahall was notified his contract won't be renewed because of test scores.

D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson announced Dec. 23 Cahall has resigned. Cahall made national headlines this fall when he came out as gay to his students during a Pride Day event.

"I turned 50. I'm tired of hiding," Cahall told his students.

Wilson High School Assistant Principal Gregory Bargeman will lead the school as interim principal next semester, according to Henderson.

She said a community meeting will be scheduled for mid-January.

Principals work under one-year contracts, creating turnover each year. Cahall had noted gains in test scores, and also oversaw a $120 million school modernization.
