D.C. Principal Accused of Grade-Tampering on Paid Leave

Investigation underway at McKinley Technology High School.

Acting D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson placed McKinley Technology High School's principal on paid administrative leave while he is investigated, NBC Washington's Chris Gordon reported.

That's not a finding of misconduct, but a necessary precaution, according to the school district.

D.C. public school officials said an investigation is under way on allegations that the principal at McKinley Technology High School gave seniors phony grades. The allegations are part of an ongoing probe, schools spokesman Fred Lewis said.

The Washington Examiner reported it received transcripts of 12th-grade students in the 2008-2009 year that show David Pinder, the principal, as the teacher of some courses. Some students never got grades below a C, the Examiner reported. Most were given a P for passing.

Lewis said it would be rare for a principal to be listed as an instructor. Pinder would not comment on the allegations.

Information developed by the DCPS security team has been sent to the U.S. Attorney's Office for further review, according to DCPS.

McKinley had a graduation rate of 96.5 percent in 2009, the most recent data school officials available. That’s one of the highest rates in the city.
