D.C. Police Take Injured Officer to Hospital After Repeated Calls for Ambulance

An injured D.C. police officer could not get an ambulance to take him to a hospital Tuesday despite repeated requests.

The first call came in as "officer down" near a liquor store on 4th Street NE near Rhode Island Avenue NE at 6:38 p.m. The officer was hurt during an arrest.

A fire truck, Engine 12, came in seven minutes, according to dispatch records, but no medic was on board. Engine 12 reported the officer as having a traumatic leg injury.

Then an ambulance was requested five times, according to call records.

At 7:06 p.m., an EMS supervisor was dispatched to the scene, but at 7:08 p.m., 30 minutes after the first call, police decided to drive the officer to the hospital in a cruiser.

A minute later, an ambulance was dispatched then canceled.

"We're looking into it,” a D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman told News4. “We had units on the scene but no indication that an ambulance had arrived, and we're trying to determine exactly why that happened."
