The suspect robbed a woman at gunpoint Tuesday morning, Metropolitan Police Department Interim Police Chief Peter Newsham said at a news conference. Other people pursued the man and flagged down officers.

Police arrived at the scene in the 1300 block of Good Hope Road in Southeast shortly after 8 a.m. and saw a man who matched the description of the suspect.

Officers told the man to stop, but he did not. Police saw the gun and told the man to drop it, then shots were fired, striking the man several times.

The man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
