DC Police Resume Tweeting Crime News After Backlash

District of Columbia police have resumed using Twitter to report breaking crime news after the department faced a backlash for discontinuing the practice.

The Metropolitan Police Department tweeted Tuesday afternoon that it would continue to tweet information about crimes as they occur. Police soon followed up with a tweet about a shooting in southeast Washington.

The Washington Post reported on Sunday that the department had scaled back its tweets. Instead, it was sending out crime updates with an alert system that people have to sign up for on the city's website.

Some activists and community members criticized the move as a setback to transparency, particularly as the city experiences an increase in violent crime.
