D.C. Police Chief to Face Questions About Tactics at Hearing

Washington's police chief will be speaking about her department's tactics in an appearance before the D.C. Council that's expected to draw protesters.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier will testify at an oversight hearing on Tuesday. She'll face questions about the Metropolitan Police Department's use of tactics like stop-and-frisk and "jump-outs,'' a term that describes police sweeps by officers in unmarked cars.

Lanier has said in the past that jump-outs are rarely used. But protesters demanding nationwide reform of policing practices say the tactic is used more often than city leaders acknowledge and is evidence of racial bias. Representatives of the DCFerguson Movement plan to attend the hearing.

Lanier will also face questions about marijuana enforcement now that possession of up to 2 ounces of pot is legal in the city.
