An officer investigating suspected drug activity was hospitalized early Sunday after being run over by a car.

Manassas Park police said an officer from their department was dispatched to the 8600 block of Cartwright Court to investigate a report of a suspicious vehicle and suspected drug activity.

Authorities said Robert Daniel Washington III, age 21, was in a vehicle at the scene.  When approached by the officer, police said Daniel tried to evade arrest by speeding up and then running over the officer.

Paramedics transported the officer with serious injuries to Fairfax Hospital.

Washington attempted to flee the area on foot but was apprehended a short distance from the scene.  During the arrest, he was shot .

The Manassas native has been charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer and malicious wounding. He was taken to the hopsital where he is in unknown condition.

The injured officer was a 5-year veteran of the force.  On Sunday morning he remained hospitalized in stable condition.
