Some Areas Stop Plowing Roads Due to Blizzard

Several area transportation departments, including the District, Montgomery County and Alexandria, temporarily stopped plowing roads Wednesday due to the hazardous blizzard conditions.

District officials said crews were asked to pull to the side of the roadways as whiteout conditions were in effect. Officials said it was a temporary measure and that snow operations have not been suspended. District officials said all crews are still out working and on roadways.

There are similar sentiments in Montgomery County.

"We will get back out as soon as conditions permit," said Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett.

"We will have ample supply of salt and sand on our roads," Leggett said. "The governor has promised that whatever we need, we'll get it."

The Maryland State Highway Administration said it is continuing to plow major roads.

A VDOT representative told the Washington Post that Virginia plow operators have not been stopped but would be if road conditions become unsafe.

Pepco pulled back its crews working to repair downed power lines and other electric equipment Wednesday morning, saying conditions were too unsafe for them to continue working.

As of about 2:45 p.m., Pepco had more than 4,200 customers without power.

A Pepco spokesman said crews were sent back out into the field just after 2:30 p.m. and would continue working as long as the weather cooperated.
