Md. Trooper Saves Backseat Baby

A newborn baby breathed its first breath not in a hospital ward, but along the side of Route 100 in Maryland.

The child is alive Monday night thanks to the efforts of a Maryland state trooper.

Sergeant Daniel McLain, a 20-year-veteran of the force, pulled over on the state highway near Pasadena to assist a stopped vehicle at 7:45 a.m. Monday morning.

As McLain approached the vehicle, he noticed the driver was in a highly agitated state.

In the back seat of the car was a woman holding on to newly-born child, with the umbilical cord wrapped around its neck.  The baby was blue in color.

The trooper responded by administering CPR.  After a few minutes, the baby began breathing on its own, and its blue skin turned rosy pink.  An ambulance quickly arrived and transported mother and child to the Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

Officials there reported that both are in good condition.
