51-Star Flags Line Pennsylvania Avenue From White House to US Capitol

What if the American flag had 51 stars, not 50?

Washington, D.C.'s mayor had dozens of 51-star flags hung along Pennsylvania Avenue NW ahead of a hearing before Congress next week on D.C. statehood.

About 140 flags flew on Pennsylvania Avenue between the White House and the U.S. Capitol as of Friday afternoon. They were installed earlier in the day.

Mayor Muriel Bowser ordered the installation of the flags before the U.S. House of Representatives is set to hold a hearing Thursday, Sept. 19 on D.C. becoming the nation's 51st state. The historic hearing will be the first on the topic in more than 25 years.

D.C. residents cannot elect senators nor voting members of Congress, and the federal government must give final approval to local laws.
