D.C. Mayor-Elect Bowser Says No to Unregulated Legal Pot

The mayor-elect in the nation's capital says she won't allow an initiative legalizing marijuana to take effect until the District of Columbia has a system in place to tax and regulate the drug. But the head of the legalization campaign says he'll fight her on that.

Democrat Muriel Bowser said at a news conference Wednesday that she'll tap a member of her transition team to study pot laws in other states and move quickly to enact a regulatory structure.

District voters overwhelmingly approved an initiative on Tuesday that legalizes possession of small amounts of pot. But it doesn't allow for the legal sale of the drug.

D.C. Cannabis Campaign chairman Adam Eidinger says delaying the initiative to establish regulations would thwart the will of the voters.
