A District of Columbia man has been found guilty in the 2012 murder of another man on a crowded block in Southeast D.C.
The jury found 23-year-old Demonta Chappell guilty of first-degree murder, weapons-related charges and obstruction of justice on Wednesday. He'll face up to life in prison when he's sentenced Jan. 27.
Chappell had pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors say shortly after 9 p.m. on Oct. 27, 2012, 26-year-old Stevann Moorer was standing on a block crowded with people celebrating a horseshoe championship in a nearby park. Prosecutors say Chappell walked up to Moorer, pulled a gun and shot him, and then stood over Moorer and shot him several more times before fleeing into an alley.
Prosecutors say Chappell also tried to contact witnesses in his case from jail.
