D.C. Housing Expense Offset by Transportation Savings

Location is key to costs

The nation's capital is one of the most expensive places to live, but a new study finds in some neighborhoods the higher cost of living can be made up in travel savings.

The study by the D.C. Office of Planning discovered families living in certain parts of the city saved about $16,000 in transportation expenses, which made up for the higher cost of living in those communities.

The household cost of transportation across the region ranges between $8,500 a year and $25,000.
