DC High School Student Shot, Killed in Southeast

Jaylyn Wheeler, a Ballou High School student, was shot near 600 Alabama Avenue SE

D.C. police are searching for three suspects after a 15-year-old high school student was shot and killed in Southeast Wednesday.

Jaylyn Wheeler, a Ballou High School student, was shot near 600 Alabama Avenue SE, a short walk from the school.

Police are investigating if the shooting had anything to do with a fight that happened earlier in the day at the school and if it is related to the school's rivalry with Somerset Prep DC on Wheeler Road SE.

One suspect was wearing tan pants and no shirt and another was wearing tan pants and a white polo shirt, police said on Twitter. Both were black males, police said. There was no description for the third suspect.

In a post published on Twitter, John Hayden Johnson Middle School remembered Wheeler, a former student, as "funny, smart, and charismatic."

Included in the post was a photo of Wheeler smiling widely as he held a drawing adorned with a blue ribbon.

"His passing will deeply impact our community for days, months, and years to come," the school said.
