DC Handed Out 1 Million Parking Tickets in 2012

AAA: D.C. issues 436 parking tickets per hour in 2012

Finding a parking spot in the District can be a challenge, and if you park illegally, be prepared to get caught.

AAA-MidAtlantic submitted a  Freedom of Information Act request to get a look at the city's parking ticket data for fiscal year 2012.

Their research showed D.C. collected $92.5 million in parking ticket revenue in FY12.  The city issued 1.8 million parking tickets. That amounts to 7.3 tickets per minute and 436 tickets per hour, AAA-MidAtlantic said.

It was a 6 percent drop from the previous year during which 2 million tickets were issued.

Most of the tickets were given to drivers who live outside D.C.

"Day-in and day-out, drivers engage in the relentless competition to find just one of the city's coveted 17,000 open on-street metered parking spots, " AAA-MidAtlantic's John B. Townsend II said.
