D.C. Fire Chief Wants to Swap Fire Truck for Ambulances at Downtown Station

D.C. Fire and EMS Chief Kenneth Ellerbe will testify before the D.C. Council Friday about a plan to relocate the fire truck at Engine Six in Northwest and replace it with more ambulances.

“Eighty percent of the work we do is EMS related,” Ellerbe said. “We also know that’s a centrally located facility. We can put an additional number of EMS resources to provide better coverage throughout the city. We also have fire equipment in the area, so it’s not like we’re going to leave the area covered.”

Ellerbe said he’d also discuss the plan with community leaders.

It’s unclear if Ellerbe has the political support to make the move.

Engine Six is located across the street from Dunbar High School.
