The D.C. Council will consider a proposal to allow for public financing of campaigns.
Independent Council member David Grosso introduced the bill Tuesday, calling it a way to reduce the influence of big money in politics. It comes after Grosso and other council members called for an end to a law that allows political-action committees to raise unlimited funds during non-election years. Supporters of Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser started such a committee this year before shutting it down.
Grosso's bill would provide matching public funds for campaign contributions of $100 or less. Candidates would have to meet a threshold of small donations to qualify for public financing.
Also Tuesday, independent Council member Elissa Silverman introduced a bill that would explicitly ban coordination between candidates and political-action committees.
