D.C. officials want a judge to allow the city to continue enforcing a centerpiece of its handgun-control legislation while a court fight over it continues.
Judge Frederick J. Scullin Jr. on May 18 granted a preliminary injunction in the case, telling the city that it had to stop enforcing a provision that requires people to show a good reason to get a license to carry concealed handguns outside their homes and businesses.
In a court document filed Tuesday, city officials asked Scullin to stay his ruling and allow the city to continue enforcing the provision while it appeals.
In 2014, Scullin found the city's ban on carrying handguns outside the home unconstitutional. The “good reason” provision was a key piece of a law city officials adopted in response.
