Cutting Dreads to Raise Childhood Cancer Funds

A local musician is shaving his signature locks for a good and personal cause. Jeff Franca, of Clifton Virginia, will shed his dreadlocks this weekend as part of a fundraiser for less toxic childhood cancer treatments.

Jeff's brother, Nicholas, battled neuroblastoma for 6 years. Neuroblastoma is a cancer that develops from immature nerve cells found in several areas of the body, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Jeff moved home in 2008 to care for his brother and began growing the dreadlocks. Nicholas lost his battle in 2012 but his brother continued growing his hair out - a symbol of letting things naturally go.

Two weeks ago, Jeff started a fundraising page, vowing to shed his dreads if he raised $15,000 to help families dealing with childhood cancer. The page raised more than $20,000 so Jeff is getting a haircut on Sunday.
