Crews are working to repair tiny cracks in the columns on the South Portico of the Virginia Capitol that have led to puddles of water forming in the underground extension.
A Richmond company will fill and coat the microscopic cracks in the stucco sheathing of the eight columns over the next month, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports. The repair project began last week and is expected to cost more than $82,000.
The Department of General Services traced the leaks to the columns and tiny cracks that allowed rainwater to travel into the building below the portico.
State officials don't know the origin of the cracks. They said the August 2011 earthquake centered in Louisa County could have contributed.
