1 Killed, Suspect Injured in Crash on BW Parkway in Maryland

DC police were pursuing a suspect moments before the suspect crashed into another vehicle in Maryland, U.S. Park Police said

A woman is dead after a suspect struck her stopped vehicle Monday night on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (MD-295).

Police said the suspect struck a K9 cruiser at Quarles and Kenilworth avenues in Northeast and then officers began to pursue the suspect's vehicle.

D.C. police continued to follow the suspect on I-295 before calling off the pursuit, U.S. Park Police said. But the suspect continued to flee northbound on 295 into Maryland.

The suspect was driving north on the parkway at the ramp to the Inner Loop of I-495 at a high rate of speed when it hit the back of a vehicle that was stopped on the right shoulder, Park Police said. The crash happened about 9:15 p.m.

A woman was extricated from the stopped vehicle but died at the scene of the crash, authorities said. Her name has not yet been released. Investigators were still trying to contact her family, Park Police said Tuesday morning.

The suspect was airlifted to a trauma center and remained hospitalized as of Tuesday morning, Park Police said.

Video from Chopper4 showed debris from the two vehicles scattered across the Parkway.

On Tuesday, glass and what appeared to be medical supplies littered the side of the road where the victim's car was crushed.

Northbound MD-295 was closed between Riverdale Road and I-495 after the crash. There were significant backups as crews responded to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Park Police are asking anyone who may have seen anything prior to the crash to call their Criminal Investigations tip line at 202-610-8737 or Park Police Communications at 202-610-7500 or email USPP_tipline@nps.gov.
