The cost of a taxi ride in D.C. soon could go up.

The cost of a D.C. cab ride could increase if a task force's recommendations are approved.

The task force released its report Friday and concluded that the current $1.50-per-mile rate be increased to "at least" $2 and that the $15-per-hour wait charge should be raised to $24, according to the Washington Examiner.  The task force also recommended the elimination of the $1 fuel surcharge put in place when gas prices were near their peak.

The report also recommended eliminating the $19 cap on all rides that start and end in the District.

The task force said that the District's current $3 fee paid at the start of a cab ride is one of the nation's highest, but the current $1.50 charge per mile is one of the lowest, the Examiner reported.

The D.C. Taxi Cab Commission could approve the task force's recommendations when it meets again in January.

  • lc Tuesday, Dec 2 at 4:41 PM FLAG COMMENT You definately can not call and expect a cab to show up. Cabs in DC have really gotten worse. You can ONLY share cabs @ Union Station. How rediculous. They spend more time circling the block than picking up those who are hailing a cab. Have not had a situation where I was over charged or the meter not running. Luckily, I have been riding cabs for years and pretty much know when they are doing something wrong. I have not ... MORE >
  • DMAwashington Tuesday, Dec 2 at 4:38 PM FLAG COMMENT GENE - I get your point but this is the profession they chose. A map would be helpfull for especially out of towners who have no clue where they are going. When you give a cab driver the address you expect him to know where it is. I work in downtown DC and live in DC. Most evenings I get a taxi home and I cannot tell you how many times the driver did not know how to get there. I am paying for a service and quite honestly ... • Gene Tuesday, Dec 2 at 4:00 PM FLAG COMMENT A cab driver's income is on the low end of the food chain in the District of Columbia. Cab drivers work long hours as much as 16hour per day compared to the average worker who does 8hours per day. Cab drivers are self employed which means they are responsible for all health care expenses, which, as we all know, are very high. They are responsible for all insurance and car maintenance. If the car goes into the shop for one day, ... MORE >
  • JLL Tuesday, Dec 2 at 3:30 PM FLAG COMMENT I agree with everyone on how terrible and corrupt the DC cabs have become. The service is horrible. It comes to the point now that I avoid them at all costs. I would rather wait for a Metro Bus before I hail a cab. Ever since the meter system (which was suppose to help riders) was implemented I have noticed that all cabs have been very corrupt in DC. One driver even joked about it after I caught him red-handed and he realized ... MORE >
