Construction Interrupts Va. Verizon Service

Around 1,100 people have phone or internet service affected

About 1,100 Verizon customers in the Merrifield area of Virginia have not had phone or Internet service since late Thursday night.

Verizon spokesman Harry Mitchell said that a contractor doing highway construction work damaged three Verizon communications cables and the ducts that contained them. Mitchell said that the incident took place on Gallows Road near the intersection with Lee Highway in Falls Church and that wireless and FiOS services were not affected.

As of midday Saturday, Mitchell said that technicians had laid one of three replacement cables and were splicing and testing the copper wires inside them. Technicians were working on laying the other two cables.

Full restoration is not likely to happen for several days. Anyone without service is asked to call Verizon at 1-800-VERIZON (837-4966) or go on their website at www.verizon.com/support
