Va. Store Clerk Shot During Robbery Shares Story

A convenience store clerk who was shot in the head during a robbery is sharing her story from her hospital bed.

Kelly Wood, 32, was working at the Fas Mart Store on Brock Road in western Spotsylvania County early Saturday morning when a man posing as a customer entered the store. Police say the man pretended to purchase an item and waited for Wood to turn away before shooting her twice in the head.

"I heard a big bang and I panicked a little," Wood told NBC12. "I want this guy to be put in jail."

She said the suspect shot her again when she ran for the door. According to police, the gunman got away with an undetermined amount of cash and merchandise. Customers who have watched the surveillance video say the man stole a cabinet full of medication.

Wood will need multiple reconstruction surgeries to repair her broken jaw and shattered cheek, NBC12 reports.

Since news of the shooting broke, customers and well-wishers have rallied around Wood and her family, filling donation jars and planning a fundraiser to help pay her medical expenses. Organizers say the April 5 fundraiser will feature a bounce house, door prizes and music.

Rita Rose is one of Kelly's regular customers who, along with FasMart managers, is organizing "Wishes for Kelly."

"I believe we were given two hands: One to help ourselves and the other to help others around us," said Rita Rose, one of Wood's regular customers who, along with Fas Mart managers, is organizing "Wishes for Kelly." "I want her to worry about her road to recovery and not how the bills are going to be paid or who is going to take care of the children."

Fas Mart District Manager Sherry McGregor said she's already picked up more than $5,000 from the collection jars. She says several bake sales will be held at Spotsylvania and Stafford area Fas Marts over the weekend.

Contributions also can be made online or to Fas Mart at Union First Market bank branches or PO Box 795, Locust Grove, VA 22508.

Police say tips have poured in since the release of surveillance footage from the shooting.

The suspect is described as a white male, 25 to 35 years old, 5'4" to 5'7", weighing 160 to 170 pounds, and with a black goatee. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and jeans.
