Committee Recommends Censure for Marion Barry

A special D.C. Council committee has recommended that Councilmember Marion Barry be censured and stripped of his committee chairmanship for accepting cash gifts from two city contractors.

The committee also voted Monday that Barry should be barred from chairing another committee for the rest of the council period, which runs through the end of 2014.

The recommendations now go to the full council and would require a vote by 9 of the 13 members for approval.

Barry admitted that he took a total of $6,800 from of two construction companies that have done business with the city. He has already been censured and fined by the city's ethics board.

The former four-term mayor was censured by the council previously in 2010 for steering a city contract to a former girlfriend.
