Climbing Instructor Accused of Sex Assault of Student

A climbing instructor from Rockville, Md., has been arrested on charges of sexual assault of a 14-year-old female student, according to Howard County police.

Michael J. Lyons, of 1037 Brice Road in Rockville, is a 31-year-old instructor at Earth Treks Climbing Center in Columbia, Md., where the attacks allegedly occurred, police said.

According to police, the victim, who is on the competitive climbing team at the Columbia Earth Treks location, reported that Lyons had engaged in sex acts with her between April and June.

Lyons has been charged with sex abuse of a minor, sexual solicitation of a minor, multiple other sex offenses and second-degree assault, said police. He is being held on $100,000 bond.

Police said Lyons is a climbing instructor for the U.S. National Climbing Team and at other Earth Treks Climbing Center locations in Maryland.
