Civil War Sites Mark Memorial Day with Flags, Parade

Maryland's two biggest Civil War battlefields are marking Memorial Day in distinctly different ways.

At the Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg, the weekend of remembrance begins with a parade Saturday from the nearby town of Sharpsburg to the Antietam National Cemetery. On Monday, the battlefield will present a program at the cemetery with speakers, a cannon salute and musical selections.

The Monocacy National Battlefield near Frederick is displaying 2,200 U.S. flags from Saturday through Monday to honor all those killed, wounded or declared missing on July 9, 1864.

The Battle of Antietam was fought Sept. 17, 1862. About 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or declared missing there on the bloodiest day of the Civil War.
