Christmas Eve Fire Leaves Families Homeless

Fire causes major damage to Maryland apartment complex on Christmas Eve.

A three-alarm fire caused major damage to a Camp Springs, Md., apartment complex on Christmas Eve.

Firefighters were called to the Courts of Camp Springs just before 2 p.m. Thursday.

When crews first arrived they found flames burning through the third floor roof, the fire quickly spread to an adjacent building. At that time, fire officials sounded the third alarm, bringing in more than 90 firefighters to the scene of the blaze.

One of the fire victims, who was crying, told NBC 4's Elaine Reyes, "It's Christmas Eve. Oh my God. It's all I can say. It's Christmas Eve and my baby doesn't have anything. I didn't expect that."

One firefighter sustained first- and second-degree burns and has been transported to the burn unit at the Washington Hospital Center. The firefighter is in good condition. No other injuries were reported.

The fire department has declared 15 apartments unlivable, and residents must find a new home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and damage estimates are still being tabulated.
