The bullet-proof windows of a recreation center in D.C.'s Columbia Heights neighborhood may have saved lives Monday night.

Shots rang out around 7 p.m. according to police.  A group of people in ski masks approached a 15-year-old boy and opened fire right in front of the center in the 1400 block of Girard Street NW.  The 15 year old was hit in the hand.  Gunfire also shattered more than half a dozen rec center windows designed to stop bullets.  Inside, children and adults ducked for cover.

"All of a sudden, everyone was under the table," 12-year-old Kamal Ferguson told News4.

"I was really shocked," said Katrina Hayes, who was also inside the rec center.  "I was up there doing Tai-chi, and I heard the noise and looked out the window.  I saw people running."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact D.C. Police.
