Children Injured as Car Hits Small Pool

Seven injured, including four children in the pool

Several children were among the injured when a Toyota SUV plowed through them as they played in a front yard pool in Prince George’s County Friday afternoon.

Four children ages 4-10 were in that small, aboveground pool in the 5200 block of 57th Avenue in Riverdale, Md., about 4 p.m. when the driver left the roadway and struck the pool before coming to a stop against a neighboring home.

“The Ford Explorer was on 57th Avenue and the Toyota was behind it,” Prince George’s County Maj. Rob Brewer said. “The Ford Explorer was slowing to take a left-hand turn on to Jenifer Place, and the Toyota passed on the left-hand side and then collided with the Ford Explorer. The Toyota ran off the roadway through a fence and struck the swimming pool.”

The youngest child became pinned against the side of the pool, News4’s Jackie Bensen reported. All four were taken to an area hospital but all are expected to be OK.

Two adults -- the 30-year-old driver and an 80-year-old passenger -- and a child in the SUV also were injured, Bensen reported.

Police are investigating whether aggressive driving is behind the accident.

The driver of the Toyota likely will be charged, police said.
