Child Killed, Mother Hurt After Being Struck by Car

Loudoun County investigators are trying to determine if a mother and her 8-year-old son were in a crosswalk Monday night when they were hit on Farmwell Road in Ashburn, Va.

The child died as a result of his injuries.

A sedan was heading west on Farmwell at about 9:15 p.m. when it hit the woman, Eman S. Thabet, and her son, Beshoy B. E. Shokr, who were crossing near Ashburn Village Boulevard.

Witnesses told police the car had a green light at the time of the accident.

The boy was transported to Inova Loudoun Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His mother was airlifted to Fairfax Trauma Center and is in stable condition.

The child was a first-grader at Dominion Trail Elementary School in Ashburn. A group of grief counselors were to be at the school today to talk with students.

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Accident Reconstruction Unit was on the scene for hours overnight, shutting down the intersection as they investigated.

The intersection re-opened early Tuesday morning.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol was a factor in the accident. The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police. No one has been charged.
