Child Fatally Struck by Boat Propeller Near Ocean City

Police say a 9-year-old boy has died after he fell from a pontoon boat near Ocean City and was struck by its propeller.

Kaden Frederick, 9, of Howell, New Jersey, and an 11-year-old fell from a rented boat Wednesday afternoon and were struck by its propeller in Sinepuxent Bay.

Frederick was one of four people sitting with their legs dangling from the front of the boat as it moved, which is illegal in Maryland, Natural Resources Police spokeswoman Candy Thomson said.

Thomson says Frederick fell, the operator couldn't stop and the propeller hit the boy. She says emergency crews couldn't resuscitate him. The 11-year-old victim received cuts in the incident, but is expected to recover.

The boy was the 11th person killed while boating this year in Maryland.
