Census: DC area home to 6 of 10 richest counties

New census numbers show the Washington region is home to six of the 10 counties with the highest household incomes in the country.

Loudoun County, Va., topped the list with a median household income of about $119,000 in 2011, followed by Fairfax County, Va., at nearly $106,000 and Arlington, Va., with almost $101,000. Other counties in the top 10 are Howard and Montgomery in Maryland and Prince William in Virginia.

The numbers show that the Washington region's economy was largely cushioned as the recession took a toll on households elsewhere. In 2007, before the recession started, five counties in the area were included in the top 10.

Virginia's Fauquier County also made the top 10 list with a median household income of nearly $94,000.
