Catholic Archdiocese Ends 80-Year Foster Care Program

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is ending the city's foster care program. It's the first official fallout over the District's decision to legalize same-sex marriage.

While it may be legal for same-sex couples to walk down the aisle, becoming a foster parent just got a little harder. That's because Catholic Charities, which runs 20 social service programs in the metropolitan area, will no longer oversee its foster care program.

The program, which consists of 43 children and 35 families, will now be under the National Center for Children and Families.

Catholic Charities says the transfer comes as a direct result of the impending same-sex marriage bill, which goes against the organization's religious beliefs.
