The Chain Bridge will NOT be closed as scheduled this weekend, according to the D.C. Department of Transportation.

Crews were scheduled to close the bridge from 8 p.m. Friday until Monday at 5 a.m., but this weekend's rain has canceled those plans.

The project to reconstruct the bridge began in June of last year, and officials were hoping to have it done by now, but here have been a number of setbacks -- from the holidays to record-breaking snowfall.

This weekend, workers were planning to pour new approach slabs, replace expansion joints and upgrade street lights, among other projects.  The bridge was already scheduled to be closed next weekend.  That plan is still on.

Before this latest setback, the project was expected to be complete by May 31.
