Dozens Attend Candlelight Vigil for Slain Md. Woman

Dozens of people attended an emotional candlelight vigil on Friday afternoon to remember a Frederick County woman found dying in her front yard.

The vigil took place at Brunswick High School, where 67-year-old Lillie Morris worked as an instructional assistant for nearly 30 years.

Morris died Monday as she was being rushed to the hospital. Maryland State Police troopers had found her bleeding from multiple stab wounds after getting a 911 call about someone lying in a front yard in Jefferson.

Morris' granddaughter, 19-year-old Hestina Harris, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in Morris' death on Wednesday. No attorney is listed for Harris in court records.

Harris' father spoke at the vigil, saying he appreciated "everyone coming out here for support."

"Thank all y'all," he said through tears.

Several people at the vigil shared stories about Morris and the impact she had on their lives as a cheerleading coach at Brunswick High School.

Morris' friends and family said she was "a force for good'' in her community, and that "to know her was to love her.''
