Carjacked Taxi Involved in Hit-and-Run in Montgomery County

Passenger takes control of taxi from driver

A taxi was involved in a hit-and-run collision in Montgomery County Wednesday night, but apparently it wasn’t the cabbie’s fault.

Police are looking for his passengers at the time. One allegedly took control of the taxi and was driving when the collision took place.

At 6:34 p.m., a man and woman got in a Barwood cab near Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and asked to be taken to the Target in Rockville.

“The cab driver related to us that from the moment the two fares entered the cab, they started criticizing his driving and calling him names -- just berating him,” Montgomery County police Capt. Paul Starks said.

At one point, the man got out of the cab, opened the driver’s door, pushed the driver to the passenger seat and began driving on Rockville Pike.

“We believe that both of these subjects were on [the driver] in a hostile way from the very beginning, and when [the driver] went for his cell phone at one point, the male subject said it just wouldn’t be a good idea,” Starks said.

At Old Georgetown Road, the cab hit another car, but the passenger continued driving, eventually arriving at the Target, which the couple entered to shop.

When they were done, they left in another taxi.
